 Statistics

  • One in six persons (16.9%) in Greenville lives in poverty, including more than one in five children (22.9%);
  • Nearly one in four persons (23.7%) in Spartanburg lives in poverty, including more than one of every three children (38.1%) - this is twice the national average!
  • More than one in five persons (22.5%) in Anderson lives in poverty, including more than one of every three children (35.5%);
  • A recent survey that studied food hardship, the lack of money to buy food that families need, found that 22.4% of all households in South Carolina could not always afford enough food to feed their families - the fifth-highest rate among all states (FRAC, 2010);
  • South Carolina has the fifth-highest rate of child food insecurity in the country.  One out of every five children in the state lives in a household that can not always acquire enough food, including 20.7% of very young children under the age of five (
  • The state currently has the fourth-highest unemployment rate in the country, where one in eight adults is without a job (BLS, 2010);
  • The Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson CSA average unemployment rate for 2008 was 6.6%.  By December 2009, the area had not only reached double-digit unemployment rates but the December rate was nearly double the average rate for 2008; Unemployment is now 12.2%.

Our services include homeless shelters for men, women, women with children, and families; free addiction recovery facilities (1 for men and 1 for women), a shelter for children, a shelter for teenage boys, a food relief ministry, and several transitional houses for men and women graduating our addiction recovery program.       Our facilities include:

We were founded in 1937, as a small soup kitchen, during the great depression,
by a group of local businessmen.
